If Carlsberg did prisons…

For those not familiar with Joe Arpio, he is the County Sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona. He keeps getting re-elected over and over again.

These are some of the reasons why:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio created the “tent city jail” to save Ari

zona from spending tens of millions of dollars on another expensive prison complex.Inmates sleep in tents! He has jail meals down to 20 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

He banned smoking and pornographic magazines in the jails, and took away their weightlifting equipment and cut off all but “G” movies. He says: “They’re in jail to pay a debt to society not to build muscles so they can assault innocent people when they leave.”

He started chain gangs to use the inmates to do free work on county and city projects and save taxpayer’s money. Men work in Pink “Clean and Sober” Shirts. Their underwear is also Pink!

Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn’t get sued for discrimination.

He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again but only allows the Disney channel and the weather channel.

When asked why the weather channel, he replied: “So these morons will know how hot it’s gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs.”

He cut off coffee because it has zero nutritional value and is therefore a waste of taxpayer money. When the inmates complained, he told them, “This isn’t the Ritz/Carlton. If you don’t like it, don’t come back.”

He also bought the Newt Gingrich lecture series on US history that he pipes into the jails. When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series that actually tells the truth for a change would be welcome and that it might even explain why 95% of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.

With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just set a new record for June 2nd 2009), the Associated Press reported: About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed wire surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts.

On the Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing pink boxer shorts were overheard chatting in the tents, where temperatures reached 128 degrees.”This is hell. It feels like we live in a furnace,” said Ernesto Gonzales, an inmate for 2 years with 10 more to go. “It’s inhumane.”

Joe Arpaio, who makes his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic. “Criminals should be punished for their crimes – not live in luxury until it’s time for parole, only to go out and commit more crimes so they can come back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things many taxpayers can’t afford to have for themselves.”

The same day he told all the inmates who were complaining of the heat in the tents: “It’s between 120 to 130 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents there too, and they have to walk all day in that sun, wearing full battle gear and getting shot at, and THEY have not committed any crimes, so shut your damned mouths!”

Sheriff Joe was just re-elected for the fourteenth time as Sheriff in Maricopa County, Arizona.

Lets try to get a similar fantastic jail system here in the UK. Im thinking the problem won’t be the heat, but the cold.

Mac sales to businesses grow by nearly 50%

Sales of Mac hardware to U.S. businesses grew by 49.4 percent year over year in the September quarter, posting continued growth while PC sales shrank.

Charlie Wolf of Needham & Company highlighted Apple’s success in the enterprise as the “big story” regarding Mac sales in the September quarter. With PC sales to U.S. businesses declining 13.3 percent year over year, Apple had a 62.7 percentage point difference.

Overall, the Mac’s unit share of the U.S. business market was 9.3 percent in the September quarter. That was up from 5.9 percent of total sales in June, and 5.4 percent in September of 2011.

Apple had an even bigger share of revenue of PC sales to U.S. businesses, accounting for 17.4 percent. That was also up from an 11.5 percent share in June, and 10.7 percent share a year prior.

Wolf believes Apple’s success has come from a focus on adding features to OS X to make it more compatible with Windows infrastructures. He also feels a key step was the 2006 introduction of BootCamp to run Windows on Intel-based Mac hardware.

“For its part, Microsoft added features to exchange and its other network products that more effortlessly accommodated other operating systems, including Apple’s OS X operating system,” he said. “These steps enabled the Mac to become a more responsible, if not first-class, citizen in Microsoft’s network environment.”

But the most important factor for businesses has been the “halo effect” of the iPhone and iPad. As businesses have embraced Apple’s iOS devices, he believes they’ve become more likely to place Macs in the workplace as well.

Apple sold a total of 4.9 million Macs in its September quarter, which represented a new quarterly record for the company. Mac sales slightly edged the same three-month span from a year prior, growing 1 percent.

iPhone 5 doubles Apple’s share of US smartphone sales – now more than Android!

By AppleInsider Staff

The launch of the iPhone 5 has propelled Apple to a 48.1 percent share of U.S. smartphone sales, edging the iOS platform past Google’s Android.

The latest data from Kantar Worldpanel revealed that the iPhone 5 launched helped Apple move past Android, which had 46.7 percent of sales over the last 12 weeks. Apple’s share is expected to grow even more as availability of the iPhone 5 improves.

“The last time we saw iOS overtake Android in the US was when the iPhone 4S was released and Apple managed to retain its lead for three consecutive periods,” said Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech. “This time we predict that Apple will beat its previous high of 49.3 percent and achieve its highest ever share of the US smartphone market within the next two periods.”

Most iPhone 5 sales in the U.S — 62 percent — were to customers who already owned an Apple product. And customers also indicated they will remain loyal, as 92 percent in America said they will choose an iPhone the next time they upgrade.

The survey of customers, which covered a 12-week span ending Oct. 28, also found that users were most excited by the addition of high-speed 4G LTE connectivity, as well as the larger 4-inch display on the iPhone 5.

While the data shows the iPhone 5 has given Apple a significant boost in the U.S. market, the company did not see the same level of share gains in Europe. There, Android accounted for 73.9 percent of sales in Germany and 81.7 percent in Spain over the last 12 weeks.

Kantar Worldpanel did find that Apple saw share gains inf our of the five major countries in Europe, particularly in Britain, where iOS accounted for 32.7 percent of smartphone sales.

“Germany remains a tough market for Apple with its share falling by 5.1 percentage points over the past year,” Sunnebo said. “The Samsung Galaxy S3 has taken almost a quarter of the country’s smartphone sales over the past 12 weeks to boost Android yet further. In Italy, strong sales of the Nokia Lumia 610, the fourth best selling handset over the past 12 weeks, and the Nokia Lumia 800, the seventh best selling, have helped drive Windows’ share up to 11.7 percent – the highest across Europe.”

Fluid

Today I have found a most wonderful App for Mac Os X – Fluid.

Fluid ( http://fluidapp.com ) creates a full application from a website that then allows you to pin it to your start bar and use it like a full application. Its absolutely brilliant.

I have typed in the web address of my blog admin section (it is written on WordPress after all) and created it as an App, now allowing me a stylish “Blog” icon on my dock that when I click it opens directly into the admin dashboard. Talk about time savings!
