The two steam locomotives Numbers 1 and 2 were built by Messer's Wilkinson. Each ran on 2ft diameter solid wheels. There were two sets of wheels. Each engine weighed 7 tons and could pull a trailing load of 12 tonnes.

In 1883 when the tram opened numbers 1 and 2 were described as "The two handsome saloon cars, drawn by a Wilkinson Steam Engine" Cars numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4 were all of the same basic design, with elaborately paneled sides and open end platforms.

Numbers 1 and 2 were saloon cars with four windows per side and a layer of wood with tar covering for a roof. Numbers 3 and 4 were open cars, the bodies ending at the top of the side panels. Number 4 was provided with an awning roof supported on Iron poles, and sometime later some portable sides were made so they could clip unto the poles.

Some cars had six benches in a row. These could hold 4 persons i.e. 24 persons per car. These cars were commonly referred to as "toast racks", and were originally open at both sides with no roof.
