Planning

During the 19th Century a number of railway systems were constructed in County Antrim including :-

1. Ballymena to Parkmore and Retreat,

2. Ballymena to Larne,

3. Ballymoney to Ballycastle,

4. Ballymena to Belfast Port,

5. Ballymena to Ballymoney to Coleraine to Portrush.

One of the reasons for building these railways was for carrying minerals, but people near these railways liked the system of cheap transport (see map on next page)

The people of Bushmills wanted a tramway so that they could have a cheap way of transport.
