The Tram Closes
The Tram eventually closed down because :-
(a) they did not have enough money
(b) they owed to much money
(c) they did not have enough money for repairs.
On the 30th of September 1949 the Tramway was closed for the winter. This had been normal practice for some years.
In 1949 (November) the company told the public about the possible closure. Within days protests were in the papers and on the radio. Despite the protests the company went ahead and closed the tramway as they could not raise the necessary money to keep the tramway running.
The Traills auctioned most things in Belfast on the 15th March 1951. later the Portrush Depot and Causeway Terminus were sold. The total came to £15,015. This paid off all of the companies debts. The tramway was a great invention in its day, being run by hydro-electric power.
It must have been a very enjoyable way of traveling for the 66 years it was running. It would be great if it could run again.
